Convert flooring area into boxes and allowance
Use product box coverage, transparent allowance and integer packaging instead of treating floor area as an order.
A floor measurement describes the space. A box label describes what you can buy. Those numbers often do not divide evenly, so a useful estimate needs both an area result and a complete-box result.
Use the coverage of the product you are buying
Enter the total area covered by one complete box. Do not enter the dimensions of one plank as if they were a whole box's coverage. Box coverage varies with the number and dimensions of pieces, and even products with similar names can differ.
This calculator is for materials sold by area coverage per package. It does not generate plank or tile placement, account for joint geometry, calculate adhesive or grout, or promise that offcuts can be used elsewhere.
Choose and expose the allowance
The entered percentage increases the measured area before packaging is rounded. It is a planning input, not a universal installation standard. Use the product and installer requirements for your pattern and conditions. Enter 0% explicitly if that is the assumption you intend to test.
Test floor: 18 m². Allowance entered: 8%.
Planned coverage = 18 × 1.08 = 19.44 m².
Product A covers 2.2 m² per box: ceil(19.44 ÷ 2.2) = 9 boxes, covering 19.8 m².
Product B covers 1.8 m² per box: ceil(19.44 ÷ 1.8) = 11 boxes, also covering 19.8 m².
Equal purchased area does not establish equal cost or suitability. Enter each actual box price if you want a materials-only comparison. The price result excludes tax, delivery, installation and other supplies.
Subtract stock after finding the total box need
If Product A's plan needs nine boxes and you already have two usable matching whole boxes, buy seven. Check condition, product compatibility and batch requirements before treating stock as usable. The calculator does not certify them.
A useful measurement check
For an L-shaped space, split it into non-overlapping rectangles, add those areas, and assign the same product to the parts. Do not use the large outer rectangle without removing the missing section, or add two rectangles that share a corner area.
See an L-shaped example and calculate full boxes.
